To round out the recipes for “Blueberry Month” I decided to do something a little savory. I had also never made a barbeque sauce so what better time than now?
I liked the unique element that the blueberries added to this dish. My one complaint was that the recipe called for a bit too much vinegar for my taste (I don’t care for too tangy a flavor in my bbq). I would reduce it if you feel the same. It paired nicely with the chicken but I could see it going well with pork or fish as well. Enjoy!
Blueberry Barbeque Sauce

Ingredients
- 1½ t Olive Oil
- ½ diced onion
- 1½ t minced garlic
- 2 T dry red wine
- ¼ cup cider vinegar
- 1 pint fresh blueberries
- 2T brown sugar
- 1T Worcestershire sauce (I used soy sauce)
- 1½ t lemon juice
- 1½ t cornstarch
- pinch cayenne,chili powder, salt and pepper
Instructions
- In large sauce pan , heat oil over medium heat
- Saute onion and garlic till translucent
- Mix cornstarch with wine and vinegar and add to saucepan
- Bring ingredients to a simmer
- Stir in blueberries, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice and spices, bring to a boil
- Simmer over low heat until thick, about 1 hour
- When sauce has thickened and cooled a bit puree in blender and food processor
- Taste and adjust seasoning to preference
